Ms. Kirsti and Ms. Melanie came to see us from the Kent Fire Department.
October is Fire Safety Month.
We learned many ways to keep safe today.
These nice fire fighters brought us treats!
We learned to practice dialing 911 on a toy phone, NOT a real phone.
If we are sleeping and hear the fire alarm, we are to crawl on the floor - NEVER stand up because that's where the smoke is. Smoke is full of poisonous gasses that can harm us quickly.
We learned when the door is too hot to the touch (on the back of our hands), we need to keep the door closed and get out through a window.
Then we meet at the "family meeting spot." Where is your family meeting spot?
Now our homework is to learn our phone number and address, so that we can be prepared in an emergency. If we need to call 911, we must know our phone number and address so that help can reach you quickly.
When the fire department has to enter to find us, we are to make as much noise as possible, so that the fire fighters can find us quickly.
If we are on a higher floor, we need to put out a "flag" so that the fire fighters can find us quickly. A flag can be a sheet, blanket, flag, coat, or anything that can hang out the window.
Or, if there is a safety ladder stored upstairs and you can get to this ladder, you can use the ladder to get out the window and down to safety.
We also learned NEVER to touch matches or a lighter. We need to get an adult to take care of each of these items to keep us safe.
Did you know you need to change your home's fire alarm every TEN years?
Did you know you need to change the carbon monoxide alarm every five to seven years?
Now our homework is to create a safety plan. You need to have two ways out of each room in your home: door and window.
A big thanks to these two fire fighters, Ms. Melanie and Ms. Kirsti, for teaching us how to keep safe.
